Claims Procedures

What to do in the event of a loss

Experiencing a breakdown, theft, accident or any other type of loss can be disconcerting. That is when you can count on your team of insurers to step up and take charge. To get through any unforeseen circumstance in the best possible way, we suggest you follow this advice. Feel free to contact us for more information.

Automobile

Broken glass Expand
  • In the event of a broken windshield, go directly to a windshield repair specialist, who will confirm your insurance coverage and applicable deductible. If the windshield can be repaired instead of replaced, no deductible will apply.

Do not

  • Have the vehicle repaired before the insurer or representative has assessed the damage.
Accident or Collision Expand
  • In the event of a collision with another vehicle:
    • Fill out an accident report.
    • Get witnesses’ contact information, if applicable.
  • In the event of an accident outside Quebec, obtain a police report.
  • If someone is even slightly injured, call the police or 911.
  • If possible, take photos of any damage, the scene of the accident and the other vehicle’s licence plate.
  • If your vehicle is not operational, have it towed to the garage of your choice. The adjuster will assess any damage.
  • Contact your broker or, if the loss occurred outside regular business hours, call your insurer directly after leaving a message with your JSA broker.
  • Before renting a replacement vehicle, make sure your insurance policy covers the rental costs.
Theft or Vandalism Expand
  • Contact the authorities and obtain a police report.
  • Draw up a list of items in the vehicle that were destroyed, damaged or stolen.
  • Contact your broker or, if the loss occurred outside regular business hours, leave a message and call your insurer directly.
  • Before renting a replacement vehicle, make sure your insurance policy covers the rental costs.

Home or Business

Robbery or vandalism Expand
  • Contact the local police station.
  • Take photos of any damaged property.
  • Draw up a preliminary list of stolen or damaged goods.
  • Contact our claims service.
Fire Expand
  • Secure the premises after the fire. Ventilate, if necessary.
  • Protect any undamaged goods and take the necessary measures to prevent further damage, theft and vandalism.
  • Contact your broker after calling emergency services or, if the loss occurred outside regular business hours, leave a message and call your insurer directly to provide any necessary information (e.g., date and time of the incident, circumstances surrounding the loss, fire services or police report number, nature and extent of the damage, partial or complete interruption of your activities).
  • Take photos of damaged goods.
  • Draw up a preliminary list of damaged goods.
Accident with Injuries on Your Property Expand
  • Provide the victim with first aid and call emergency services or 911, as needed.
  • Identify the people responsible in the event of a lawsuit, and take down witnesses’ contact information.
  • Secure the premises.
  • Contact your broker or, if the accident occurred outside regular business hours, call your insurer directly.
  • Take photos in order to facilitate the investigation.
  • Keep any bills related to the incident (e.g., ambulance transport).
  • Provide us with any legal documents received.

Do not

  • Admit responsibility or try to settle the situation on your own.
  • Repair or replace any goods without prior authorization from your insurer.
